Chesapeake Conservation and Climate Corps & Maryland Climate Corps

ShoreRivers (via the Chesapeake Bay Trust) has three open positions: one for a one-year Chesapeake Conservation and Climate Corps member and two for members of the Maryland Climate Corps.

The Chesapeake Conservation and Climate Corps (CCCC) is a one-year term of stipend-supported service, starting each August, that places young adults with nonprofit organizations or government agencies for a full-time, service experience in the environmental field. The Maryland Climate Corps (MCC-SYO) is a 9.5 month term of stipend-supported service, starting in September and ending in June, that places young adults with nonprofit organizations, for-profit entities, or government agencies for a full-time service experience in the environmental field.

Throughout both programs, the young professionals (ages 18–25) receive experience managing projects and programs, leadership and professional development mentorship, and a support network of other young professionals.

position descriptions

  • ShoreRivers’ Conservation and Climate Corps Member will primarily work within the organization’s Riverkeeper and Education departments, and will have opportunities to collaborate with its Community Engagement and Agriculture & Restoration departments. Work will be based out of ShoreRivers’ Easton office but the CCCC member should expect to travel between the watershed communities we serve. The projected field to office ratio is 50/50 overall, but differs seasonally.

    In the Education Department, the CCCC member will play a significant role in K-12 environmental literacy programming by co-leading outdoor lessons on school grounds, co-leading field trips, and guiding student environmental action. The CCCC member will also support ShoreRivers’ annual Upper Shore Youth Environmental Action Summit, a conference for high school students that is meant to empower youth voice and action through networking and workshops led by peers and professionals. The CCCC member may support community outreach to recruit speakers, design workshops, lead a workshop at the Summit, and be day-of event support. 

    In the Riverkeeper Department, the CCCC member will play a significant role in water quality monitoring and bacteria monitoring programs by taking weekly water samples, coordinating volunteers, and collecting, analyzing, and communicating data. The CCCC member will also support the submerged aquatic vegetation restoration program and legislative research for local, state, and federal policy issues to protect our waterways.

    ShoreRivers will provide a monthly housing stipend of $500 during the program year.

    The knowledge, skills, and experiences the MCCer will gain from this position include:

    • First Aid and CPR certification

    • American Canoe Association safety and instruction training

    • Boaters’ safety license 

    • Certification in Meaningful Watershed Educational Experiences 101 & 102 

    • Grant-writing

    • Classroom and event management

    • Volunteer Coordination

    • Maintenance and use of water quality equipment, including YSI and IDEXX bacteria processing equipment

  • The Maryland Climate Corps member who works with the Education Department will support our environmental education programs, Green Center and School programs, and advance our outreach to school communities and student families. This person will receive training and mentoring in order to co-lead field trips and school ground lessons and be the lead coordinator for ShoreRivers’ Green Center program, communicating with teachers directly about their application and student projects.

    The MCCer will coordinate student volunteer opportunities, support the planning of the Upper Shore Youth Environmental Action Summit, and represent ShoreRivers at school and community family events. Lastly, the MCCer will have opportunities to join our Riverkeeper, Restoration, and Outreach departments to learn an overview of all our programming.

    The knowledge, skills, and experiences the MCCer will gain from this position include:

    • First Aid and CPR certification

    • American Canoe Association safety and instruction training

    • Meaningful Watershed Educational Experience 101 and 102 certifications

    • Understand the Maryland State Department of Education Environmental Literacy Standards and Framework

    • Outdoor learning and environmental education pedagogy and best practices

    • Delivering and writing lesson plans in the 5E format (engage, explore, explain, elaborate, evaluate)

    • Student behavior management

    • Experience and training in environmental data collection using a YSI

  • This member of the Maryland Conservation Corps (MCC) will work in both the Agriculture & Restoration and the Community Engagement departments.

    In the Agriculture & Restoration department, the member will assist in implementing of restoration projects and best management practices, lead the monitoring of BMPs, and assist with our agricultural research efforts. In the Community Engagement department, the member will primarily support our “Tree the Shore” program, which provides no-cost to communities throughout the Eastern Shore. Additionally, the member will help with our “River-Friendly Yards” program, which transforms yards to mimic the natural environment for better water quality, support native species, and benefit our local ecosystem. Through these projects the member will acquire project implementation and monitoring, research, and outreach skills.

    The knowledge, skills, and experiences that the MCCer will gain from this position include:

    • Project implementation skills

    • Monitoring and maintenance knowledge of BMPs, trees and native plants.

    • Surveying skills using GPS equipment and drones (there is potential to obtain a drone certification)

    • Experience in operating a wet chemistry spectrophotometer (NuLAB) and processing data

    • Skills in conducting on-farm research

    • Outreach and communication skills


General Position Requirements

  • For the CCCC program: Must be 18 to 25 at the start of the program.

  • For the MCC Program: Must be at least 18 at the start of the program and have graduated from a Maryland High School within the past three years.

  • Outgoing personality with good communication skills. Must be able to work with a team, but also be self-motivated in individual tasks.

  • Able to lift at least 50 lbs., swim, feel comfortable on boats and kayaks, and do physical outdoor activity in various weather conditions.

  • Willing to work a flexible 40-hour schedule with some evening and weekend hours.

  • Proficient in Microsoft Office software.

  • Must have a license and car.

  • Must have access to housing within a reasonable commuting distance to Easton, MD.
